Update of sorts

This site, along with my other sites were down for several days while they were moved to a new server. I frequently had technical problems with the other server, which I think may have been due to an inadvertent misconfiguration on my part. Anyway, this site is now on a new server and should be for awhile.

In the coming months, however, there may be some more changes. I’ve been playing around with Fluidinfo, which is a cloud-based database/service. It aims to be sort of like a Wikipedia for objects (objects has a special meaning in Fluidinfo, which I won’t get into here). I’ve already figured out it’s a great place to create ‘objects’ for movies and ‘tag’ them appropriately, so I’m working on a project for my Review Haiku based on Fluidinfo. Once that’s done, I’ll likely work on a project for films, awards, festivals, actors, actresses, directors, and other people associated with films. That’s still very early in the idea stage, so it may be awhile before that gets done.

A sense of scale

The idea for this site was to be a place where people could go for a definitive list of awards and the films (or actors, directors, etc) that won them. IMDB lists lots of awards, but it’s not comprehensive.

Starting with the African Movie Academy Awards, I began to get a sense of scale about the task of this site. Each awards ceremony would have a page where all the winners were listed, then the films and people would each have their own pages, because a film might win many awards from different institutions, and over an actor or director might win many awards over the course of their career. It’s not aiming to duplicate what IMDB does, since this site isn’t concerned with all films, only those that won awards.

Generally, awards recognize excellence, so if a film earns lots of awards, it’s probably very good. If an actor earns lots of awards throughout his or her career, chances are they are very good at what they do. Having a page for each person or film that wins an award is a good way of cross-referencing the information. However, with this newfound sense of scale, I also see it’s going to be a lot of work.

Since the site is new, I’m still figuring out how to make this work easier, but at the moment it looks… tedious. It’s worthwhile, IMO, but that doesn’t make the work easier. Hopefully, I’ll figure it out at some point. Or maybe someone will volunteer to help :-)

Hello world!

Hello world is an appropriate title for this post. Around the world there are thousands of film awards and hundreds of film festivals, and the intent of this site is to serve as a definitive source for films and the awards they’ve earned. We’ll see how well that works out. If it works okay, I’ll get a more appropriate domain name and move this site to that.
